2009 Christmas Play
By Monique McElveen
“Joy to the world the Lord has come…” These were the words that rung out amongst the congregation as we celebrated Christmas with a joy and thanksgiving. The Christmas Program 2009 was originally scheduled for Sunday December 20 but due to the snow blizzard, it was rescheduled for December 27.
The morning worship service was filled with guest and family and friends as they celebrated the birth of Jesus Christ with us.
As the 27th was also our month’s Youth Sunday, Sister Ruth Oni led us in a wonderful praise and worship service.
Brother Demetrius McElveen gave a powerful yet simple sermon that fit the season: “Preparing your Gift” (Acts 20; 2 Corinthians 9). He encouraged us to prepare our gifts for the use and work of the Kingdom.
The program was preceded by Christmas dinner in the fellowship hall as the young children and youth prepared for a spectacular production. Everyone scurried around to prepare, it was a sight to see! The Master of Ceremony was our own Brother Bode. He led the congregation in songs of the season as the children lined up to say there recitations. The primary and intermediate Sunday school classes were very well trained for their recitations and did a wonderful job in illustrating their love for Christ as we celebrated his earthly birth.
The youth had been preparing for the Christmas production of “It’s a Wonderful Life.” This musical production was led by Sisters Pethol Banjo and Aquanette Daniel. The
youth were dressed in costume as they took there places on stage to teach the congregation the real true meaning of Christmas and what Christmas would be like with no Christ. The Christmas play was followed by a solo by Brother Godwin Ekpan (“His eye is on the sparrow”) followed by a reading of “Twas the Night before Jesus Came” by Sister Hannah Osagelah. This poem reminded us that the purpose of Christ’s original coming was for our salvation and challenged us to be ready for his soon return.
The program was concluded by Reverand Josephine McElveen, our Pastor, making Christmas love offerings on behalf of the congregaton to three families. The Pastor also gave gifts to the primary and intermediate Sunday school classes as well as the beginner students. The Program was closed out in prayer by assistant pastor Brother Ayodele Mobolourin. Overall it was a blessed program and neither spirits nor performance were affected by a week’s delay.
