February Special: Prayer, Service, and Celebration
By Ruth Oni
Who says prayer isn’t hard work? It sure is! But how thankful we are that God is always faithful to attend to the prayers of His people! February was a special month: beside the commemoration of Black History, it was also our dedicated month of prayer and each week the saints of God went all out in persistent, prevailing prayer. On Monday and Friday nights we gathered at church for collective prayer, while Tuesdays through Thursdays a telephone prayer conference, which was established for this purpose, enabled us to join our voices in prayer to God. We can look back and thank God for the snowstorm of 2010 because our phone-in prayer meeting was born during that unforgettable blizzard!

On last Sunday in the month we had a beautiful Cultural Day celebration in the afternoon. The Washington D.C. church family is quite diverse and so we usually end Black History Month with a celebration of our cultural diversity. After the morning worship service, an array of mouthwatering dishes from different parts of the world was shared. Afterward, Sister Monique McElveen who coordinated the celebration service took us down memory lane as she pointed out the importance of learning about our heritage. Attendees had the opportunity to learn a great deal about the history of America’s capital and our home city—Washington, D.C.—with particular emphasis on the role African Americans played in its original design and planning. Other highlights included informative slide shows, authentic Southern Gospel renditions and a fashion show where participants displayed various traditional attires. With thirteen different cultures represented, our church family is truly a melting pot. We thank God for both our diversity and our unity! content area text goes here
